VAT rates differ by country
Each member state sets its own rates under the common VAT Directive. Standard rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, and several changed recently: Estonia to 24% in July 2025, Romania to 21% in August 2025, Finland's 14% rate to 13.5% in January 2026, Austria's new 4.9% rate for staple foods in July 2026, and Sweden's temporary 6% on food from April 2026 to the end of 2027.
The EU VAT calculator holds the standard and reduced rates of all 27 countries, dated and linked to their sources.
Selling to businesses in other member states
For many B2B services across borders the customer accounts for the VAT under the reverse charge. The invoice then shows no VAT, the words "Reverse charge" and the customer's VAT number, as Article 226 of the VAT Directive requires.
The EU VAT invoice generator adds the reverse-charge note and warns when the customer's VAT ID is missing. The VAT number checker checks the format of each number; only the Commission's VIES service confirms that a number is registered.
Getting paid by SEPA transfer
The IBAN validator checks the length, structure and check digits of an IBAN, so typing mistakes are caught before a payment. The SEPA QR code generator makes an EPC QR code for an invoice, which many European banking apps read to fill in the payee, IBAN, amount and reference.
E-invoices
An e-invoice is structured XML, usually in the UBL or CII syntax, not a PDF. The e-invoice viewer reads UBL and CII invoices, including Peppol, XRechnung and the XML inside ZUGFeRD and Factur-X, and checks that their totals add up.
