US sales tax calculator by state

Sales tax in the United States is set by each state, and many counties, cities and special districts add local rates on top, so the rate on a sale depends on the address it is delivered to.

Estimate US sales tax from the 2026 state rate plus your local rate, for any state or DC, added to a price or taken out of a total. Runs in your browser.

Estimate only: actual rate depends on exact address, product taxability and local rules.

California's 7.25% already includes a mandatory 1.25% statewide local share. Enter only the additional local rate.

The local rate is the combined county, city and special-district rate at the delivery address. It varies by address, down to ZIP+4, so a state's average local rate is only an average.

Groceries, clothing, prescription drugs, digital goods and services are often exempt or taxed at a reduced rate, depending on the state.

When a seller collects no sales tax, the buyer may owe use tax instead.

Examples

Texas with a local rate

$1,000 in Texas with a 2% combined local rate: 6.25% + 2% = 8.25%, so sales tax is $82.50 and the total $1,082.50.

Take sales tax out of a total

$108.25 including 8.25% sales tax: price = 108.25 รท 1.0825 = $100.00, tax $8.25.

California's statewide 7.25%

$500 in California with no district tax entered: 7.25% gives $36.25. The 7.25% already includes the mandatory 1.25% statewide local rate, so don't add it again.

A state with no sales tax

$500 delivered in Oregon: no state or local sales tax, so the total stays $500.

Louisiana at 5%

Louisiana's state rate rose from 4.45% to 5% on 1 January 2025. $200 at the state rate alone is $10.00 of tax.

Washington, DC

DC's rate stays at 6% through 30 September 2027; the planned rise was postponed. $250 at 6% is $15.00 of tax.

How to use it

  1. Pick the state, or the District of Columbia.
  2. Enter the combined local rate (county, city and special districts) for the delivery address, or leave it at 0 for the state rate alone.
  3. Enter the amount and choose whether to add tax to a price or take it out of a total.
  4. Read the state tax, local tax and total, then copy, download or print them.

Questions

Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska allows local sales taxes, and Montana has local resort taxes, so a sale there can still carry tax.
What local rate should I enter?
The combined local rate at the delivery address, which is the county, city and any special-district rates added together. It can change from one ZIP+4 code to the next, so check the state revenue department's rate lookup for the exact address.
Which states have no local sales taxes?
Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia charge the state rate only. In those, leave the local rate at 0.
Are California, Utah and Virginia's statewide add-ons included?
Yes. California's 7.25% includes a mandatory 1.25% statewide local rate, Utah's 6.10% includes 1.25%, and Virginia's 5.3% includes 1%. Enter only the further local or district rates on top.
Is everything taxed at the same rate?
No. Groceries, clothing, prescription drugs, digital goods and services are often exempt or taxed at a lower rate, and the rules differ by state. Hawaii, New Mexico and Arizona tax the seller's gross receipts instead of a classic sales tax.
What if the seller doesn't collect sales tax?
The buyer usually owes use tax at the same rate to their state instead. This calculator gives the same figure for either.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
