Examples

A valid UK IBAN

GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32 has 22 characters, the UK length, and passes the mod-97 check.

One wrong digit

GB82WEST12345698765431, with the last digit changed, fails: the mod-97 remainder is 71 instead of 1.

Germany and France

DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00 (22 characters) and FR14 2004 1010 0505 0001 3M02 606 (27 characters) are both valid. French IBANs can contain letters.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE

SA03 8000 0000 6080 1016 7519 (24 characters) and AE07 0331 2345 6789 0123 456 (23 characters) are both valid.

Spaces and lower case

gb82 west 1234 5698 7654 32 is read the same as GB82WEST12345698765432: spaces are removed and letters are upper-cased before the check.

How to use it

  1. Paste one IBAN per line, up to 500. Spaces and lower case are fine.
  2. Run the check.
  3. Read the result for each line, with the country, the length and the reason for any failure.
  4. Copy or download the results.

Questions

What does the IBAN check cover?
That the country is in the IBAN registry, that the IBAN has that country's length and account structure, and that the two check digits pass the ISO 13616 mod-97 test.
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. The check digits catch most typing mistakes, but a well-formed IBAN can still belong to a closed account or to someone else. Confirm the payee with your bank before sending money.
How does the mod-97 check work?
Move the first four characters to the end, replace each letter with two digits (A = 10 up to Z = 35), and divide the number by 97. A valid IBAN leaves a remainder of 1.
Which countries are covered?
The 89 countries in the SWIFT IBAN Registry, including every EU country, the UK, and Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman in the GCC. The US, Canada and Australia do not use IBANs.
Why is my Åland or Martinique IBAN shown as Finland or France?
Territories covered by a parent country use its prefix. Åland uses FI, the French overseas territories use FR, and the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey use GB.
Does it find the bank's BIC?
No. It checks the IBAN only and does not look up bank details.
Are the IBANs I paste uploaded?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. This tool does not keep a draft in your browser.
